The first of our season preview series, Doug Tate took time to give a look ahead to UVic’s season.
Wanderer Sports: What are your goals for the year?
Doug Tate: It’s a difficult one, we’re gonna start off the season with a lot of guys who are not available. We’ve got a lot of first year players who are. We’ve got about 90 players out this year. Number one goal is get to competitive action for the players. We want to be competitive, we didn’t lose many players from last year. The challenge is, can we compete with some of the top teams in the physical aspects of the game?
WS: Losses from last year?
DT: Brett Beukeboom signed a pro contract in Europe, he’s a big loss, he was one of our top forwards. Struan Robertson was also very important for us and he’s gone too.
WS: Who have your added to the squad?
DT: Both Jamie Mckenzie and Adam Kleeburger have returned to school after stints away, they are going to very important in both the playing department and in leadership.
WS: Given the challenges you’ve noted physically, what’s the game plan going to be, at least to start the season?
DT: We’ve got some talented players, the guys have worked hard in the off-season, but there are very physical teams in the league. We hae to rely on speed and skill but that’s pretty typical for a team. We had What will be your squad’s key to success It’s a long season, trying to stay healthy is always a key. This weekend we’re missing 7 guys because of the Canadian championship, then there’s the Americas Rugby Championship in October, then there’s 7s so our depth will be tested. Out of the 90 who are coming to practice so far, we’ll lose 10-15 guys in the first while, it’s too high a level of competition for them and school is busy. It’s tough getting playing time for everyone.
Already we’ve got a half-dozen guys fighting injuries, but that’s par for the course in rugby.
