Spring Training: What I’m thinking about (Feb. 22)

Good ol’ Ervin Santana. He’s a Blue Jays target. Or so some are saying.
What to make of him? He’s a solid control pitcher. Doesn’t strike out a ton of guys, but he doesn’t walk many either. He had an excellent superficial bounce-back season last year for the Royals, driven a lot by a career high ground-ball percentage. Even so, the numbers say he was pretty lucky. He pulled off a 3.24 ERA – he should have been closer to 4. He’s a solid bottom of the rotation guy who’s had a hot streak or two in his life.
And then there’s Ubaldo Jimenez, the guy that everyone dream the Blue Jays would sign. He walks a lot of hitters, but that’s ok – because he strikes out a lot of guys too. Now he’s moving to Baltimore, where he could be a key cog for a possibly playoff-bound team.
The key thing to watch with him – is he keeping the ball on the ground. He struggled in Cleveland when he didn’t. When he did, he dominated AL hitters, something that doesn’t always happen with pitchers moving over from the NL.
Dammit, Toronto, why couldn’t you snag him?
And a quick side note:
